Argentina Friends of Fulbright: General Information

Below is additional information to make your life a bit easier while you are at UA.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

You may not travel on your own outside of the Tuscaloosa/Central Alabama community except during weekends when there are no activities scheduled. You MAY NOT miss classes to travel on your own. If you do choose to travel, be sure to notify the program coordinator about your planned departure and return.

If you have friends or family members who would like to visit you while you are in Tuscaloosa, you should communicate with the Program Coordinator to make advance arrangements. Visits from family members or friends should not interfere with Program activities. Visitor participation in group activities or events is subject to approval from program staff. In general, visitors are not allowed to travel in university vans even if they are accompanying a Program participant.

Laundry facilities are available in all residence halls.

Cost: Approximately $1.50/load to wash and $1.25/load to dry

Laundry View is a feature through the UA mobile app. Using your mobile app, you can you check the availability of washers and dryers, view the time remaining on your cycle, and set alerts for laundry rooms in UA residence halls.

You will need to pay for your laundry using your Bama Cash on your Action Card. Make sure to have money added to your account. You can add Bama Cash in the ELI Office.

Tuscaloosa is in the Central time zone. which covers 20 states in the U.S., including cities such as New Orleans, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, and Nashville. This zone is five hours earlier than Greenwich Mean Time in the summer (GMT -5) and six hours earlier than Greenwich Mean Time in the winter (GMT -6). Buenos Aires, Argentina is 3 hours ahead of Central Time.

Tuscaloosa has four seasons during the year. Weather during Tuscaloosa winters can fluctuate dramatically. However, the days are typically cooler with an average monthly low and high temperature of around 35-60 degrees Fahrenheit (2-16 degrees Celsius). It can get wetter and cooler, especially at night. It is advisable to bring warm clothing. ELI staff can provide you with information on where to purchase clothing during your orientation here, if necessary.

Events

Argentina Friends of Fulbright Program Events
During your time here, you will have access to most events that take place on campus. Some may require a fee to participate. Part of your program offers you the opportunity to participate in cultural, athletic, and academic events. See the Friends of Fulbright calendar for events in January and February.

Make sure you go to the UA events calendar to find out all of the events that take place on campus. If you have any questions about a particular event, contact the ELI office for more information.

Social Media

The ELI is always looking to showcase its programs to the world. What better way to show your friends and family the UA’s culture, classes, and extracurricular activities than social media. When you are here, don’t forget to take photos and videos of your experiences. And send a couple of photos and videos to our office. We would like to promote them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

What is happening at UA today? The UA social media directory is a central listing of all of the official UA social medial channels. This can help you find out what is happening on-campus.

The ELI will ask you to participate in a couple of surveys. This is very important and it is to help provide constructive feedback to the program organizers and help future participants. In addition, the Friends of Fulbright organization will require information from participating institutions. Your full participation is greatly appreciated. You will be contacted by the program coordinator with more details later.
