What is Semester Abroad at UA?

A one-semester (or longer) undergraduate study-abroad program for students who:

  • Are enrolled in a university outside of the USA
  • Want to study abroad and earn academic credit at a major public university in the USA
  • Are non-native speakers of English who have limited English proficiency
How to Apply


What are the benefits?

  • Enroll for one semester or longer.
    • Study period can be 4-10 months.
  • Take English + academic courses and transfer credit to your home university.
    • Number of credit hours earned depends on student’s level of English.
  • Begin earning credit in January or August, or begin first with intensive English in March, May, June, or October.

What are the tuition costs?

Tuition of August 2019 – July 2020:
  • Semester: Spring (Jan-Apr) or Fall (Aug-Dec)
    • 3 academic credits + intensive English = $7,842
    • 6 academic credits + intensive English = $10,548
  • Intensive English (6-8 weeks) before semester
    • 2 months English prior to semester = $2,568

Program Information

Students with limited English proficiency can study abroad for one semester (or longer) and transfer undergraduate academic credit from UA to their home university.

Admission requirements for earning academic credit:

  • Minimum English proficiency:
    • Official Test Score (before arrival):
      • TOEFL iBT 61 or IELTS 5.5 or PTE 44 OR
  • Placement Test (upon arrival):
    • Level 5 or 6 in UA-ELI Intensive English Program
NOTE: Students who do not meet the minimum English requirements for earning academic credit will study full-time intensive English.

Credits earned based on English level:

  • Students who have an iBT score of 70-78 (49-53 PTE) or who place into level 6
    • Earn 6 credit hours in 1 semester
  • Students who have an iBT score of 61-69 (5.5 IELTS or 44-48 PTE) or who place into level 5
    • Earn 3 credit hours in 1 semester
  • Students who have an iBT score of 0-60 (0-5.0 IELTS or 10-42 PTE) or who place in levels 1-4
    • Study English for 6-8 weeks or longer until ready for level 5
