INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES AT UA

CLASS VISITS: Capstone International Academic Programs needs the help of program alumni to promote overseas study via visits to classes and to assist with study abroad fairs and information sessions. STUDY ABROAD FAIR: Study abroad fairs are held once during the fall and spring semesters. Upcoming overseas study events will be announced around campus and on the overseas study website http://overseas-study.ua.edu.

OVERSEAS STUDY INFORMATION SESSIONS: Capstone International has information sessions weekly during the Academic Year. The CIC Overseas Study Director or overseas study alumni give information to prospective students. Mark your calendar and plan to attend these informative meetings.

SPEAKERS BUREAU: Capstone International The Speakers Bureau is a dynamic program that utilizes and serves UA faculty and staff, UA international and domestic students, as well as the Tuscaloosa community. Coordinated by Capstone International Center, the Speakers Bureau provides speakers for UA classes, local school system classes, special events, and for specific international forums. CONVERSATION PARTNERS: Students in the English Language Institute meet a minimum of 2 hours per week with UA students whose first language is English. Conversation partners not only give ELI students additional practice with spoken English, but they also help students to learn about and experience life and culture on the UA campus and in the United States. INTERNATIONAL PEER ADVISORY COUNCIL (IPAC): IPAC is a volunteer-based organization designed to assist newly-arrived international students at UA with cultural adjustment and to provide an opportunity for intercultural exchange among students, both international and American. We are looking for full-time undergraduate and graduate students who are willing to return to Tuscaloosa two weeks before classes begin. This period is probably the most confusing and trying time for new international students, so it is vital that IPAC members be available then. BAMA BUDDIES: Allows students to contact each other and help build relationships. You can make friends from other cultures and countries, find conversation partners to help with learning/practice language, or just have someone to ask questions or get advice from. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS & NATIONALITY GROUPS: Find out about the on-campus organizations and nationality groups by visiting http://www.ua.edu/academic/international/services/intl_student_org.htm.

INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR STUDENTS: Located in 121, B.B. Comer Hall. The center houses various international related offices. The center is also used to host campus meetings, events, and activities such as Friday Coffee Hour.

CROSS ROADS COMMUNITY CENTER: Located in the Ferguson Center, the Crossroads Community Center was established this fall to assist student organizations with multicultural issues and facilitate coordination of multicultural programs on campus.

The center is part of a collaborative effort of the UA divisions of student affairs, community affairs, and academic affairs.

COFFEE HOUR: Capstone International Center holds Coffee Hour, each Friday during the fall and spring semesters from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Room 121 B.B. Comer Hall. UA departments, both campus, and off-campus organizations sponsor Coffee Hour. Come join us and enjoy conversation and coffee with our friends from around the world.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB (former ALABAMA MODEL UNITED NATIONS): The Goal is to promote interest in the history and development of the United Nations, to provide opportunities for members to study international relations, to participate in the simulations of United Nations conferences, to participate in other international committees, and to further encourage international education at The University of Alabama. CAPSTONE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT & SCHOLAR SERVICES (CIS): Located within the Capstone International Center, 105 B. B. Comer Hall, provides specialized services for international students, professors, research scholars, visitors, and their families. International Services conducts intensive orientation programs and provides vital information regarding U.S. Immigration compliance as well as multicultural guidance and counseling. These are on-going services that monitor individual progress according to federal regulations. Staff members advise and assist international student organizations. CIS fosters international friendships with organizations such as Tuscaloosa 's International Friends (TIF), which sponsors a friendship family program for international students.

JAPAN CULTURE & INFORMATION CENTER (JCIC): JCIC provides information, educational programs, and cultural programs about Japan and the Japanese people for our campus and local communities. JCIC provides assistance and information about life in the U.S. to Japanese students and residents. As the world continues to shrink, the JCIC is the perfect place for persons from diverse cultures to meet and learn more about each other and their cultures. 135 B. B. Comer Hall.

INTERNATIONAL HONORS PROGRAM (IHP): The IHP is an honors program for students in any college, any major, who wish to internationalize their studies. Its requirements include 2 years' study of a foreign language and studying abroad for one semester or two summer terms. The IHP office is located in 272 Nott Hall, Dr. Fran ONeal, director (foneal@bama.ua.edu). Information on the programs can also be found in the Capstone International Center (CIC), 135 B. B. Comer Hall or http://ihp.ua.edu/. CIC works hand in hand with the IHP to provide advising and assistance to students in making these choices. Overseas study directors at the CIC can begin working with you during your freshman year.

CAPSTONE INTERNATIONAL NEWSLETTER: Is published bimonthly by the Capstone International Center for UA friends, alumni, faculty, staff, and students. Editorial offices are located at 135 B.B. Comer, (205) 348-5312, Email: ips@bama.ua.edu or http://international.ua.edu. Hardcopies can be found at locations such as B. B. Comer Hall, Ferguson Center information desk, and Student Recreation Center.

IS A FULBRIGHT IN YOUR FUTURE? Overseas study alumni can plan their next long-term sojourn overseas with support of the prestigious Fulbright student scholar program. If you are interested in conducting research, studying, and/or teaching English overseas upon graduating from UA or as a graduate student, contact Dr. Jane Stanfield, the UA Fulbright representative at 135 B.B. Comer.

GERMAN SUPPLEMENTARY SCHOOL (GSS): The German Supplementary School , established at UA in January 1995 to provide supplementary education in German for children aged 6 yrs. to 16 yrs. from German-speaking countries, offers UA students an opportunity to work with a unique educational program. CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS: The Japan-America Society of Alabama (JASA), the Alabama-Germany Partnership (AGP), and the Tuscaloosa Sister-Cities Commission (SSC) sponsor annual dinners, seminars, and other events that welcome the participation of overseas study alumni. Interested students should contact The Capstone International Center at 348-5256.

EXCHANGE PROGRAMS: Capstone International has 24 partner universities in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, where students can earn transfer credits toward graduation from UA and pay UA tuition costs. Some students choose to study overseas multiple times during their academic career at UA; once is not enough.
