Health and Wellbeing

Assisting students in staying safe while studying abroad is a top priority for our staff. The UA Education Abroad office has emergency policies and procedures that are continuously reviewed and updated for all approved programs. We work proactively to provide students with access to information about health and safety prior to their departure and while they are abroad.

It is just as important for your student to keep their safety in mind themselves while in country. They will learn their new city just like they did with Tuscaloosa. We encourage students to always travel in 3s and to make good choices while out in their new country.

All of our students are registered in Insurance that can help assist in a wide variety of situations. Please click on the policy to learn more about the coverages from Trip Interruption coverage to Emergency Evacuation coverage. In addition to our mandatory UA Insurance, your student may also be required to purchase in-country insurance based on that country’s requirement for student visas.

We also strongly encourage every student to enroll in the S.T. E.P. program. Learn more about this state program here.

There is nothing more important to us than your student’s physical and mental well being. There will be times when they call stressed or upset. As a supporting person in their life, we encourage you to listen, give advise when needed, and intervene only when there is a true emergency. There are moments that seem like everything is falling apart, but we find that most problems can be solved with a bit of calm research and reflection on the student’s part. There are also resources on campus for students to prepare to go abroad like the Counseling Center. Please do not ever hesitate to contact our office with any concerns about your student’s health and well-being.
