From the ELI to Graduate School

Marleth Morales Marenco
Karina Costa Baraldi

Significant life changes often begin at the English Language Institute. Marleth Morales Marenco had spent 12 years working in a public research corporation in Colombia when she, her husband and two children left in January 2022 so that she could improve her language skills at the ELI. This fall Marleth will start a Ph.D program in Management and will explore management differences in developed and developing countries.

Similarly, Karina Costa Baraldi, from Brazil, is beginning a master’s program in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Before coming to the ELI with the goal of pursuing a graduate degree in the U.S., she worked as a partner in a law firm in Sao Paulo for 9 years. “At the ELI,” she said, “I hit on my expected language proficiency but also expanded my knowledge about international cultures. This learning experience was an important turnabout in my career.”

Both women earned the ELI Certificate of Graduate Proficiency, which most departments accept in place of the standardized English test score required for international admission to The University of Alabama. We wish them great success in their graduate programs.
