Every year, United Way of West Alabama hosts Day of Action, a single day where volunteers come together to improve our community.
The first Day of Action that the Capstone International Center participated in was in 2016. Two teams of staff and international students lent their time and skills to a local school and The Humane Society of West Alabama. These volunteer projects are a great way for international students to meet the Tuscaloosa community and give back to those who depend on volunteers to help them meet their mission.
In 2024, the Capstone International Center volunteered at Crestmont Elementary School’s May Fun Day! Our friendly volunteers of International Students and CIC staff and friends had a fun filled day assisting at each of the activity stations!
In 2023, the Capstone International Center had enough volunteers to be split into three groups thanks to our wonderful international students and CIC faculty, staff and friends! The groups that went to Hospice of West Alabama and Flatwood Elementary were tasked with gardening. Our volunteers built a new raised garden for Schoolyard Roots at Flatwood while the group at Hospice provided their assistance at one of the larger projects on this Day of Action! The third group that went to Myrtlewood Elementary primed the cafeteria in preparation for a summer painting project!
In 2019, fourteen Capstone International Center staff members and international students volunteered at Temporary Emergency Services and the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter!
In 2018, volunteers from the Capstone International Center improved landscaping, worked at the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter, completed a painting project at a local school, and organized the food bank at Temporary Emergency Services.
In 2017, four teams from the Capstone International Center volunteered in the Tuscaloosa community, including work at the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter and Temporary Emergency Services.
In 2016, two teams volunteered in Tuscaloosa by helping an elementary school prepare for new students and cleaning up around the Humane Society’s animal shelter!
