What is Pathway to UA?

An undergraduate conditional admission program for students who:

  • Want to earn a Bachelor’s degree at UA
  • Meet the academic qualifications for undergraduate admission at UA
  • Are non-native speakers of English who need to improve their English
  • Want to take courses for academic credit while studying English
How to Apply

What are the benefits?

  • Enroll in one-semester or two-semester program (or in “Pre-Pathway to UA”) depending on level of English.
  • Receive full admission to degree program by passing all course work with grades of C or higher.
  • Earn 14-17 hours of academic credit while studying English.
  • Begin in August, January, or May.

What are tuition costs?

(August 2018 – July 2019)
  • 1 semester (14 credits) = $14,615
  • 2 semesters (17 credits) = $22,547   ($7,982 1st semester + $14,615 2nd semester)
Projected costs are based on successful completion of all course work with grades of C or higher.

Pathway to UA

The University of Alabama

Program Information

Students can complete Pathway to UA in one or two semesters, earn up to 17 academic credits, and then transition into full-time study for their undergraduate degree program at UA.

Pathway to UA Information Sheet

Admission requirements include:

  • High school diploma with a minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Minimum English proficiency:
    • Official Test Score (before arrival):
      • TOEFL iBT 61 or IELTS 5.5 or PTE 44 OR
    • Placement Test (upon arrival):
      • Level 5 or 6 in UA-ELI Intensive English Program

NOTE: No minimum required for Pre-Pathway to UA

Students not meeting the minimum English requirement for Pathway to UA will study full-time intensive English until ready.

Length of study & credit earned:

  • Students with an iBT score of 70-78 (40-53 PTE) or who place into level 6
    • Study for one semester and receive 14 credit hours
  • Students with an iBT score of 61-69 (5.5 IELTS, 44-48 PTE) or who place into level 5
    • Study for two semesters and receive 17 credit hours
  • Students with an IBT score of 0 – 60 (0-5.0 IELTS, 0-42 PTE) or who place into level 1-4
    • Study for 2+ semesters and receive 17 credit hours (after entry)
